Well…I haven’t written anything for a while because I have been busy with work and my Harlequin budgies just had 6 baby budgies. LOL
They are a beautiful pair and I wanted to show you the mother, father and baby budgies but the father was too busy so today you only get to see the mother and baby budgies.
All the baby budgies are totally healthy but I don’t want to disturb their feeding and the mother gets irritated so I let them in peace. I suppose if a giant hand came into the roof of my house and tried to grab my newborn child…then I would be a little irritated and stinky too!
The only one that looks a little worn out from the whole feeding regime is the father but you can see in his eyes that he is really proud.
The oldest is about 10 days old because the female has been laying like a battery hen. It is their first batch and we thought they may not be able to handle it but budgie couple really surprised up.
Now we have to increase our cage to a full size aviary. LOL But we don’t mind as there are many people here that dsaid they would love to have a harlequin baby budgie.

My first time parent birds had five babies. Mum and dad cared for them really well until they started to became hatchlings, then mum proceeded to kill them off. I saved three and successfully hand reared them. They are now happily back in the aviary.
The mother was white and the breeder from whom I bought her told me that he has had problems with white budgie mum’s in the past and I should not breed with her again.
However, I wondered as she was a first time mum whether she was just overwhelmed with five nearly grown birds in a tiny nesting box. I decided to give her one more try.
She went on to have three next time and cared for them all beautifully, leading me to believe that my diagnosis was correct.
Hi Jennie,
Many white birds often have a much more sensitive nervous system and because of this when they are under stress from outside influences which are not part of their normal routine (traffic at night, breeding, ill) they tend to react more quickly and more obviously than birds of other colors. They are very unique in character but can get be a hand full because they get the other birds unnecessarily excited. I topped holding them when one night a car honked the horn outside and I could hear fluttering in the cage. By the time I get there the white bird had somehow managed to flutter itself to death (broken neck…looked like it had gone totally mad). But on the bright side the white birds also tend to be highly intelligent. I am glad that things worked out second time around!
) P.S. Vitamin B complex in the birds water will help reduce nervousness.
I just wanted to ask a parakeet question. I have a baby its about 5 weeks old now. how soon before it comes out of the nest (house) is there a special something i have to do. i have a huge cage and the house is up high.
It sounds perfect…Is she out now? For budgies the higher the bird the more authority they have in the swarm. Make sure she has enough fresh vitamins (fresh leaf vegetables) and calcium (cuttlefish). When it’s time she will come out
) They normally come out in order that they were laid.
Hello a friend have baby budgies and u know we were so ancious to see them and stuff so we took the cage out and the mother looked mad and so i tried to get her to see the babies and then she flew and when i grabbed her to put her back in the cage she was scared or something and didnt want to cuddle the babies…and my question is after some hours will she cuddle them again!..??
To be honest…I have no idea? Is it the first clutch? How old is the baby? There are a lot of factors but generally you should not disturb the babies until they leave the nest alone. Budgies are usually sociable but they all have different personalities just like people. The baby will eventually want it’s own space and the mother won’t want to cuddle anyway…unless they are the only 2 birds in the cage.
one of my parakeets 6 eggs just hatched, and the mom is wild. we have a pretty small cage but i am giving away all but one male. maybe later we’ll have an aviary. can you tell me what to do in case my female parakeet doesn’t feed her babies? i have another female parakeet that is their friend but she won’t work. she’s kinda immature and might not know what to do
If push comes to shove you will need to hand feed them with a pulp/mush food which you can buy pre-made from the pet store or they will tell you how to make it fresh. But it is a lot of work! Imagine looking after a newborn baby…same thing. The papa needs to feed the mama and the mama feeds the babies…make sure they have access to fresh water (with a few drops of vitamin solution), plenty of sand and lots of cuttlefish.
hey i was wondering really i did have two budgies male and female they loved each other my female actually passed away today but for the past two days she was very fat and wobbly my male feed her and she sat on the bottom of the cage as she couldnt sit on the perch i was sure she was egg bound she had a nest. today she showed signs of been very uncomfy moving alot and gasping i assume she was trying to lay her eggs but failed is it possible that she was egg bound and that she died because she couldnt lay her eggs. my male is very quiet now so were giving him plenty of love and attention.
Your diagnosis sounds right. It sounds like she died because she couldn’t lay her eggs. Had she accepted the nest before hand? Females are not only choosy about breeding partners but also with nests. Had she been inside and accepted it? The most common cause is that they don’t accept a nest and it is very rare that they will lay on the ground…they would rather die first. I am terribly sorry as I know the helplessness and sadness one can feel when a bird passes away. You are not responsible and even if she had been in the nest before sometimes the smallest thing can make them feel unsure about laying in a nest. One of my birds almost went the same way because she didn’t like the cotton floor but was fine once we removed it…odd!
) Does the male bird have a partner now? They are very sociable animals and don’t survive well alone. Thanks for your question and I wish you all the best with the male budgie.
I have never raised baby parakeets before & I don’t want to do anything wrong. Mama is sitting on 5 eggs, one hatched this morning, help, what do I need to do to keep the baby alive & growing or does the mother do all the work.
Actually the papa does all the work…he brings the mama the food she needs for her and her babies. Make sure the water is kept fresh preferably with a few drops of vitamin solution in the water. That there is enough seed and sand. The father feeds the mother and the mother feeds the babies. Also, it is best not to interfere unless there is a problem. If the babies aren’t being fed or the mama or papa don’t do their job you will need to hand feed them which is a lot of work. Think like caring for a newborn baby! ;o) If it comes to this you can buy prepared baby feed at the pet store or they will tell you how to make it fresh. Hopefully it won’t come to that.
