Well…I haven’t written anything for a while because I have been busy with work and my Harlequin budgies just had 6 baby budgies. LOL
They are a beautiful pair and I wanted to show you the mother, father and baby budgies but the father was too busy so today you only get to see the mother and baby budgies.
All the baby budgies are totally healthy but I don’t want to disturb their feeding and the mother gets irritated so I let them in peace. I suppose if a giant hand came into the roof of my house and tried to grab my newborn child…then I would be a little irritated and stinky too!
The only one that looks a little worn out from the whole feeding regime is the father but you can see in his eyes that he is really proud.
The oldest is about 10 days old because the female has been laying like a battery hen. It is their first batch and we thought they may not be able to handle it but budgie couple really surprised up.
Now we have to increase our cage to a full size aviary. LOL But we don’t mind as there are many people here that dsaid they would love to have a harlequin baby budgie.

My first time parent birds had five babies. Mum and dad cared for them really well until they started to became hatchlings, then mum proceeded to kill them off. I saved three and successfully hand reared them. They are now happily back in the aviary.
The mother was white and the breeder from whom I bought her told me that he has had problems with white budgie mum’s in the past and I should not breed with her again.
However, I wondered as she was a first time mum whether she was just overwhelmed with five nearly grown birds in a tiny nesting box. I decided to give her one more try.
She went on to have three next time and cared for them all beautifully, leading me to believe that my diagnosis was correct.
Hi Jennie,
Many white birds often have a much more sensitive nervous system and because of this when they are under stress from outside influences which are not part of their normal routine (traffic at night, breeding, ill) they tend to react more quickly and more obviously than birds of other colors. They are very unique in character but can get be a hand full because they get the other birds unnecessarily excited. I topped holding them when one night a car honked the horn outside and I could hear fluttering in the cage. By the time I get there the white bird had somehow managed to flutter itself to death (broken neck…looked like it had gone totally mad). But on the bright side the white birds also tend to be highly intelligent. I am glad that things worked out second time around!
) P.S. Vitamin B complex in the birds water will help reduce nervousness.
